Early season snowstorms are a treat for me. I enjoy getting out in the local mountains around Santa Fe on my backcountry skis and skinning up a long climb. This gets my “ski legs” moving and my mind back into winter sports mode. Of course, the first few ski trips of the season are very humbling as no matter how good of shape I am in the summer, it does not seem to carry over to skiing. I think this is due to different muscles and movements.
On this gray and cold day in later November of 2015 I set out for an afternoon ski up into the Sangre de Cristo. It took me forever to find and organize my ski gear for this first outing of the year. I threw a small tripod and landscape camera into my pack just in case the light improved.
